SUMMER FUN FOR KIDS AT THE NICEVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY

GET SET… MAKE YOUR MARK AT OUR
SUMMER READING KICK OFF

SATURDAY JUNE 3, 2006 FROM 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m

We are expanding our Youth Services area and will celebrate with a construction theme this year. At our kick off we will be outside making "marks" on our temporary construction wall near the Community Center. Come grab a paint brush and leave your name, picture or splash of color and make that plywood unique! The wall will be there for a while, let's make it beautiful. Then cool off inside the library with face painting and clowns and balloon animals. We will have your reading logs ready for pick up and you can get started reading!

Read on for descriptions and schedules for the 2006 Niceville Public Library's Summer Reading Program. All programs are free and if you have any questions, please call the Library's Youth Services department 850-729-4554.

- The Brown Bag Book Club will be held in the Council Chambers on Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Bring your own brown bag lunch and we will provide beverages. Two great books are featured this summer, both by Florida author Carl Hiaasen. Books will be discussed in a casual environment, with crafts, activities and guest speakers.

June 28 - To bring Hoot's theme home, we will have a guest speaker from Jackson Guard to talk about our area's endangered animals and what we can do to help.
July 12 & 19 - We will be discussing Flush. Books will again be provided for checkout to the first 20 participants. Please read before attending.

OTHER FUN SUMMER STUFF AT THE LIBARY...

Reading Logs:
- Complete our 'Construction' logs with your daily reading. Book titles for younger readers or minutes read for Chapter Book readers. When the card is filled, bring it to the library and we will use it as an entry for a $50.00 gift certificate from Bayou Books. There is no limit to the number of logs you turn in… no limit to your reading!
Can't make a weekly program? You can still participate in the reading log program. Just come by the Library after June 3 to pick up your cards and return them anytime during library hours.

Book Bingo:
- Another fun way to record reading time and try new types of books…play book bingo. This log requires you to read books from different genres or subjects. Once you read a book from a genre listed on your card, bring it back to the library and you can make a button from our new button maker! Be one of the first to collect all 16! A completed bingo card can also be used as an entry for the $50.00 gift certificate drawing.

Need an Accelerated Reader Book?
- If you need a book and your school's media center is closed, come by the Library, we have many titles that are on your list.

Family Nights at the Library:
- Cool off in the Community Center on these summer evenings with programs designed just for family enjoyment. The programs begin at 6:30 p.m. and are free. Sign up for each in Youth Services or by calling 729-4554.

Thursday July 27 - Beau Broomall, Magician

  Summer Reading Tips*

Try out different kinds of books to see what appeals to your children.

Let children choose their own books when they start showing a preference.

Talk with your children about what they have read.

Help your children find time to read; before bed or over breakfast may be convenient.
Relax the rules for summer; let your children read what, when and how they please.

Have plenty of reading material around: magazines and newspapers as well as books.
