You can donate non-perishable food items for Sharing and Caring during the month of December in lieu of overdue and accrued fines. Donation should be close to or equal the amount of the fines owed.

Our Patron Appreciation Party is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12 from 11 - 3. We invite you to come and have some goodies with us.
Holiday Closings
Thursday, December 20 the library will close at 4 p.m. for our Employee Christmas Dinner and on Tuesday, December 25 for Christmas Day.

My Safe Florida Home Program for Homeowners
The State of Florida is providing free home inspections to eligible homeowners through the Florida Comprehensive Hurricane Damage Mitigation Program. This program will help Floridians identify how they can strengthen their homes against hurricanes and reduce hurricane damage exposure in our state and lower your homeowners' insurance premiums. Christmas Card Contest
"Create Your Own Christmas Card Contest" will be held for children ages 6-8, 9-12 and 13-17.
Cards must be created on an 8 ½ x 11 inch sheet of paper, folded as desired. Categories are Whimsical, Artistic, and Religious and will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in each age group. All entries must be received in Youth Services no later than Saturday, Dec. 8th by 1:30 p.m. Judging will take place Dec. 10th and winners will be notified on Tuesday, Dec. 11th. Stop by Youth Services for full contest guidelines.

The Library is Starting a New Evening Book Discussion Group in September
Good books are meant to be shared and discussed and we're looking for interested participants to join us for some stimulating experiences. We will be reading a variety of genres. If you are interested in joining our new evening Book Discussion group please call Lora at 729-4090. Also if you love mysteries and want to get together with others to talk about them then we still have a few openings in our Mystery Discussion group. Blood Drive-Parents!
Be a blood donor. The NWF Bloodmobile will be in the city complex parking lot from 5:30-7:30. Grab a book in the library, visit the Bloodmobile and help save the lives of those here in your own community. Blood that is donated is distributed in over 20 hospitals in the local area. One pint of blood can save up to three lives! Hope to see you there!

Grand Opening of the Friends of the Library Bookstore

'Read All about It' at your library this summer. Our Summer program begins June 13th with 'Headlines' Kick-off in Youth Services. Come by any time between 10:00 a.m. and noon to pick up your schedule of events, reading logs and register for book club. PreK & K programs will be held every Wed & Thurs at 9:30 a.m. in the YS program room. Grades 1-3 programs will be held every Wed. at 11:00 a.m. in the YS program room. Our 4 & 5 grade Brown Bag Book Club will meet every Thurs. at 11:00 a.m. in the YS program room. Book Club books are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Teen Space
Spectacular Tuesdays coming this summer in the Teen Space (ages 13-17) starting June 5th from 4-7:00 p.m. This time is all about making fun stuff! Learn how to glamorize your journal, make duct tape paraphernalia, create hemp jewelry, origami and much more. FREE supplies and snacks. Love a good mystery? Our summer teen book club is "All About Mystery". All those interested in CSI, please register by calling 729-4554 or stop by YS and see Miss Paula. Two different mysteries will be offered and special crime scene guests will share their skills at solving a mystery. In honor of Fathers everywhere, we will be showing a favorite animated movie about a young fish who is separated from his father. Dad will go to all lengths to find his son and bring him home safely. Tech Bowl 2007
The ultimate computer competition for students in Okaloosa county, elementary school, middle school and high school, will be held at the Niceville Community Center on Saturday, May 5, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Specially selected teams from each school will represent their schools in an Internet scavenger hunt competition between like grade levels. Then, high school teams will compete with each other in a computer assembly contest for the final event of the day. You don't have to have a student participating to come out and support Okaloosa County Tech Bowl participants. We look forward to seeing you in the cheering section!
Friends of the Library Tasting Fair
We invite you to come and sample some wonderful dishes prepared by the Friends of the Library. The recipes for most of the dishes are available in the Friends of the Library Cookbook. Tacky the Penguin
Tacky will arrive in Youth Services Saturday, May 5th at 10:00a.m. Books about Tacky and penguin activities will be available. The 2007 Oscar nominated animated dancing penguin movie begins at 11:00 a.m. in the YS program room. Tacky will also visit the Children's Park Sunday, May 6th at 1:00. A great photo opportunity!
Teen Space

Newcomers Gardening Series
Friends of the Library will be hosting a Newcomers Gardening Series presented by the University of Florida/Okaloosa County Extension Service Office~ This program is designed to help take some of the surprises out of gardening in Florida's Panhandle. As a matter of fact, those who attend are almost guaranteed to be surprised at all the resources available to Panhandle plant enthusiasts. This is a series of four consecutive Monday evening classes that will include information on growing landscapes, lawns, flowers, and vegetables under Florida conditions. Held in the Niceville Community Center on Monday ~ April 2, 9, 16, 23 from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm. To register please call 729-4090.
Author Luncheon with Award Winning Mystery Author Mary Anna Evans
Mary Anna Evans, award-winning author of the Faye Longchamp archaeological mysteries, will be featured at a luncheon and book signing at 11:30 am Friday, April 20 in the Niceville Council Chambers. "Artifacts "received the Benjamin Franklin Award for outstanding small press mystery, as well as the Patrick D. Smith Florida Literature Award, given by the Florida Historical Society. "Relics," the follow-up book to Artifacts, was an IMBA bestseller and SIBA Book Award nominee. She will be discussing the newest book in the series, "Effigies." The cost for the luncheon is $10.00. AARP Driver's Course
The Niceville Public Library is sponsoring an AARP Driver Safety Program. AARP developed this two day/eight hour classroom refresher to help drivers 50 years and older to improve their driving skills. The fee for this course is $10.00 per person. Seating is limited. Emerald Coast Writers Meeting

The library was awarded a collection of classic books that explore themes in American history; especially the theme of "Becoming American". If you have a story to share about becoming a US citizen, we'd love to hear it. Books are available for checkout and we encourage anyone, young and old, to read and share their opinion. Valparaiso library will present information on how to start a family tree using their resources in their Genealogy Dept. AARP Driver Safety Program
The Niceville Library is sponsoring the AARP Driver Safety Program at the Niceville Community Center on Monday, September 18 - Tuesday, September 19, 2006 from
8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. This two day/eight hour classroom refresher is for anyone 50 years or older. The fee for this course is $10.00 per person. Registrations can be made at the Reference Desk or if you need further information please call Lora Glass at 729-4090.

Family Night
This program is held the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
games including 'Memory' to 'Mastermind' are what you will find at our Family Game Night. Bring your whole family or group of friends and enjoy a little friendly competition. Choose from board games, cards or group games. Light refreshments will be served. Call 729-4554 to reserve a spot for your team.
American Girl Club
We meet the 3rd Sat. of every month from 10:00-12:00 in the Council Chambers during the school year for ages 7 and up. Next scheduled meeting is Sept. 16. Please read 'Happy Birthday Kit' before this month's meeting.
Afterschool Program
A program for children 6-12 years old, held the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Every month we'll put another stamp on your passport as we journey across the continents via our 'Kids Around the World' series. Our trip begins September 13th at 4:15-5:30 in Australia. Other countries we will visit this year are Italy, Japan, Kenya, India, Mexico and Brazil. Pick up your passport applications in Youth Services to ensure your seat on our adventures.
